Are you a fan of the ARCHERS? This long running ‘soap’ on Radio 4 has been broadcast 5 nights a week since the 70’s to a very dedicated audience. Vanessa Nuttall, our speaker on February 4th, is responsible for the sound effects on that programme and gave us a blow-by-blow description of how she does it.

She is sent the scripts for 8 programmes at a time, which is how the programme is recorded. Then she must go through them and note what activities the characters are doing and mark the scripts with what sound she thinks would be appropriate. It is a laborious process, but after that, the interesting part, she decides what sounds she will use to make the recording realistic.
The actors sit around the microphone in a semi-circle, and she needs to be close by the
character who is speaking while he is walking over a ploughed field. Meanwhile she has
thrown a crumpled black bin bag on the floor and is walking back and to over it. When
Brian is shaving, she is standing right by him scrunching a nylon pan scourer. Many of
the required sounds she has on tape, ready to play when suitable, but she has a whole
box of tricks to call upon. Most of her tools she finds in her kitchen or bathroom, a table
fork and plate for when people are eating or a vinegar bottle to squirt water.
Vanessa was a wonderful speaker with a fascinating subject.
After a break for tea and cakes, Briony took members through the Resolutions that had
been put forward to the AGM of the National Federation and took votes on each one.
Correspondence was dealt with and put on the noticeboard for members to study. The
Spring Malbank Group meeting is on March 18th and Burleydam’s duty is on the door. The competition is to be anything to do with Bees.
At the end of the evening we presented Sarah with some flowering plants and drank a
toast to her on her 90 th birthday. Sarah has just given up being treasurer after many
years, and before that she was president for a long stint.
Well done Sarah and our thanks for your many years of service to Burleydam Womens
Institute.
